About Us
William
Watkins apprenticed as the South Casco blacksmith in his late teens. As the
village smithy, he worked long hours, and neighbors saw sparks from his forge
well into the night. He was notorious as a demanding craftsman, even making
his own nails as he insisted machine-made nails were no good.
Blacksmiths Winery opened 140 years later at the same location.
Come visit the original Watkins' home, and barn. While you're here, be sure to
sample our award winning wines. We like to think that each one continues the
blacksmith's spirit of craftsmanship.
Blacksmiths has now produced its seventh vintage of 20 different
wines, including three sparkling wines, two Port style wines and both
stainless-steel and small French oak barrel fermented grape wines.
Our wines
are available through retail
shops and restaurants throughout Maine. If your favorite retailer or restaurant in Maine isn't
listed, please let them know how much you'd appreciate it if they would carry
our wines. We'd be glad to make it easier for you to find Blacksmiths
wine.
You can
always purchase our wines at the Tasting Room and Winery, which are located at Route
302 and Quaker Ridge Road, opposite the Cry of the Loon Shops in South
Casco. Visitors can sample the wines May 1 through December 31 daily from
11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Sundays Noon to 5:00 p.m. January 1 through April 30
